People with Social Anxiety Disorder have regular, intense fears of social and performance situations and fear they will act in a way that will cause embarrassment or humiliation. However, people who live with social anxiety usually have perfectly fine social skills. Often it is the anxiety that interferes with their social success. They may be so concerned with what others think that they behave strangely around them. Here is how it works: the person thinks they are embarrassing, which makes them anxious in social settings. The anxiety actually makes them act awkward or overestimate how awkward they were acting. Afterwards, they replay over and over again about how awkward they were. This process then confirms their belief that they are embarrassing, making them more anxious. And the cycle continues. In the future, they may find themselves avoiding social situations altogether if the cycle of anxiety goes on for too long.
